About Deborah Surgi

Deborah Surgi is the athletic director at Hockaday. Deb comes to the School with more than 35 years of teaching and coaching experience, most recently as the Director of Athletics at The Baldwin School, a PK-12 all-girls' private school in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Her extensive expertise directing sports staffs and serving on administrative teams at independent schools will benefit students, parents, and coaches by fostering a cohesive athletic community.


Surgi began her career in athletics and education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, an all-girls' PK-12 independent school, where she coached varsity volleyball and taught health. Deb was recognized into the school's Hall of Fame in 2015 and again in 2018 with her 1991 State Championship Team, as well as the New Orleans Prep Hall of Fame in 2013.
She was also named District Coach of the Year five times, Times Picayune All-Metro Coach of the Year three times, 

 Coach of the Year by Sportswriters and an East All-Star Coach She guided the Sacred Heart Cardinals to three state championships, one state semi-final, and five consecutive district championships. Her high school coaching record was 204-49 with a winning percentage of.806 She was designated one of the 200 Most Influential New Orleansians in Sports in 2006. From 1994 to 1996, Deb also founded Loyola University's first women's collegiate volleyball team and recruitment program. The 28-27 record over two years includes two tournament victories.
